Business phone? Here’s what to look for as an IT manager

You can find it in almost every vacancy: the company phone. A nice extra. And for many employees even an important secondary employment condition. Do you want to entice potential employees with a work phone, but you don’t know what it entails? We tell you 4 things to look out for.

1. Smart investment for your business.

Business phone subscriptions that you take out for your employees are fully deductible from both income and sales tax. Your benefit can be considerable if you have a lot of staff. The same applies to computers and tablets. Once you have decided to offer a business phone, you can purchase phones.

2. What suits your company?

When purchasing mobile phones, find out which type suits your company best. For example, which operating system do you use on desktops or laptops? If you swear by iOS, it is smart to look at business iPhones. If you use other software, Android can be nice. Make sure that it fits in with the rest of your software. Very handy. In addition, specific functions require other qualities. You want the phone to be able to do what you expect of it. Are your colleagues on the road a lot? Then think about the battery life. Is the phone used to maintain social media accounts? Then choose a phone with a camera and high-quality sound.

3. Management can be learned.

You have the tools, now you need to manage them. Managing all those business mobile devices within a company is called device management. Often they are work phones, laptops or tablets. Device management is also called Mobile Device Management (MDM). In other words: easily manage all phones and laptops from 1 dashboard. Just behind your own desk. Install security software, manage employee programs and apps and update the devices with a few clicks. It can be that easy.

Managing your business devices is especially important to reduce the risk of cyber threats. You can prevent cyber attacks by setting up strong security protocols. Think of encryption, 2-step verification and VPNs. Do you want to keep your files safe and organized? Then it is useful to use a firewall and make regular backups.

4. Private or business use?

There are 2 options to let your colleagues make business calls: a company phone or a telephone allowance. With the 1st option, you give a work phone for which you pay the costs in full. It is therefore a 2nd phone in addition to the personal phone. Good to know: if your employee also uses the phone privately, it is smart to look into a telephone allowance. In that case, your employee purchases the phone themselves. He or she also manages the subscription themselves. You only pay the part of the costs that is for business use. But what is a normal telephone allowance? You calculate this based on your employee’s invoice. This states exactly which call costs are for business use. You can of course also agree on a fixed amount. You base this on the percentage of business use.
